Beyond its dictionary definition as an adjective that means "characterized by refined taste and manners and good education,” cultured is a term that is generally used without much consideration. Culture appropriation is generally used in discussions in the media regarding different races and groups of people in certain societies that are either represented appropriately or ineptly.

Cultured is a term that is thrown around too often to those who have only studied and never experienced. While education is partly important in backing up the fact that one is well educated about a culture, however, previous anthropological studies have shown that what’s recorded and what is experienced in history is often far from any realities mainly because each perspective risks the contamination of personal bias.

Born in Vietnam and raised in the Bronx, my experiences of cultures have fortunately been diverse enough for me to understand the depth of a homogenous society to one that is differing. At one point in college while sitting in an Intro to Sociology course, I too, although quite obviously was identified by others as Asian, didn’t exactly know what I considered my own “race” to be.

I came to the States when I was 8 years old. Discovered that Usher’s 'Lovers and Friends' was much better to sing along to than Barney and Friends. I got out of ESL after a year because I hated learning my ABC’s as if I was dyslexic rather than a second language learner.

I wasn’t actually into the hip hop culture, but that was something I couldn’t really escape either since I live in a part of New York that was far from all the glitz and glamour of what you would think of when you think of this glorious city. Out of curiosity, I learned as much as I could about the hip hop culture, as rap was something that was consider to have originated from the Bronx. Eventually, that paid off with some "street creds" when I entered an all minority high school.

While you might see me in Italian shoes and French based clothing brands, there’s this part of the Bronx in me that will really never fade. So paying homage to the tougher side of my culture experience in this bomber jacket that though originated as an essential for pilots to keep warm, to one of hip hop’s culture’s most recognizable fashion pieces.
