Feathered Pajamas

I bet you've heard of BYOB (bring your own bottle) before, but have you heard of BYOP? Yep, 'bring your own pajamas.'

Last week I took a quick trip upstate to Hudson Valley, New York with my girlfriend Christina and checked in for a couple of nights at The Maker Hotel. It is a well-curated property that was created with all of Hudson's community in mind. From their glassware used throughout the space, to even the wallpapers, the hotel did not miss any opportunities to collaborate and showcase some beautiful works of local makers from the area; hence the name of the place— The Maker Hotel. Along with all of that, the space is also a well-curated collection of the founders' treasures from all over the world. Each piece of decor and furniture were unique and had their own stories, yet somehow fit together so charmingly.

Christina and I had the rare opportunity to book out their 'Artist Room' which featured this old-glamour bathroom that was just calling for a luxurious and relaxing time. Taking a look at the photos in this place now, how could I not have bought these feathered trimmed pajamas to match this lovely bathroom?

I've had my eyes on these fancy pajamas for months now but really couldn't pull the trigger due to the price tag on them until recently. Thinking back, I really still can't believe that it's been one whole year since we started going into quarantine, and long are the days of travels and enjoying time outside the comfort of our own homes. I was in denial about the fact that it would take this long for things to even begin to return to normal again, so my loungewear and sweatsuit purchases are definitely behind.

Thinking about these photos now and how much joy I felt wearing these pajamas really hit home on how important loungewear has started to grow on me. It also made me feel a little more relieved to know that whatever fancy feathered trimmed pajamas I invest in going forward, I can just take them along with me to future travels and romanticize my life in whatever stunning bathroom I might come across, like this one, too.

It seems as though Winter is sticking around much longer this year than any other year in my recent memories. Despite the freezing temperatures, I've yet to make a dent in the number of times that I got to wear all of my winter coats. That said, I randomly got an itching to share some of my favorites that I've gathered over the years. Some of these coats you've seen more times than you wanted to on my blog and Instagram, but that just means that I truly love them and will surely wear them until I can't anymore.

Coat: Aritzia (a similar option), Oak+Fort
Top: Uniqlo

The one coat that I've worn to death would be this Aritizia houndstooth one, which many of you seem to love as well. I'm a big fan of maxi coats because I love having my entire legs covered in the colder months. I've always thought that these were extremely chic-- however, they were truly having their moments this past season and especially in plaid or checked pattern.

My most asked-about coat is this double-faced cashmere one by Maison Margiela. It was a big investment coat for me so, I really try to take care of it. Hands down it's one of my warmest maxi coats that doesn't carry half the weight as let-say, my houndstooth one above, or some of my other puffer winter coats. Plus, my favorite thing about it is that it's reversible-- and with a beautiful shade of navy and gray, too.

Recently, I added a long wool coat to my winter rotating wardrobe. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get something that you would consider as essential as a black coat, but I'm really happy with this handmade one from Mango. I considered so many other options since "black wool coats" are abundant when you do a quick search on the internet, but I'm glad that I found this one for the price point.

There you have it, these are some of the coats that I've worn in the past year or so, and I don't see them being replaced in the coming year. Although Spring is just around the corner, I hope that this post inspires you to grab up some classic coats when they go on sale so that you can make the best use of them next year. Trust me, good pieces are always in style.

New York hasn't felt quite the same as it did, for obvious reasons, and for me, it's been a little hard to get adjusted to. It was my first time back in the West Village during the middle of winter, and something that's changed is that I no longer expose my ankles, as I would have- only three or four years ago. With that said, I haven't been out too often lately, so here's a quick recape of a short minute in an empty West Village alley with this outfit that I wanted to share. I picked this houndstooth, or maybe plaid coat up from Aritzia around this time last year when I was back in New York and have been wearing it throughout the year and even in Tokyo. Paired it with an easy knitted top and white denim. This ATP mini bag was gifted to me a few days ago, and with pretty much half of my bags still left behind in Tokyo, it was the perfect olive green replacement for this outfit. Also, with the streets filled with slushy snow, I figured I should be a little nicer to my Common Projects sneakers, so these Vejas will be their substitute until Spring comes.

The extra cold weather in New York City as of late made me think of this outfit that I wore a few weeks ago when I was in Fukuoka, Japan. Layering jackets is one of my favorite style hacks when trying to create new looks from old pieces during the winter months. It's also a good way to stay warm and cozy while giving your outfit a little more oomph.

When pairing jackets together, I always think about textures and materials. For this look, I went for a combination of shearling and plaid. The proportion in details is important as well because I love the moto accents on the shearling jacket paired with the elastic drawstrings from the cropped Baum und Pferdgarten jacket in this outfit.

To keep it less bulky and more streamlined, I kept the core of the outfit quite simple with a long sleeve heat-tech from Uniqlo and my usual white pair of straight-legged denim. Unintentionally, my beige boots complimented the hounds check on the blue plaid jacket perfectly (along with the traffic cone and blue background). I don't generally care much about matching my blue Loewe bag to my outfits because it's usually a statement piece for me anyway, but I just loved how it tied everything together here.

For more jacket layering ideas aside from shearling and plaid, I also love pairing faux fur with structured blazers, beige leather moto and shearling, as well as denim and puffer jackets.

Staycation at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon

I had the pleasure of staying at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon back in November of 2020 with my boyfriend. This was about a couple of months after the hotel opened in September. Even just writing this, I'm reminded of the fresh smell of beautiful wood that greeted us when we first stepped into the forested lobby located on the 31st floor of the Kamiyacho Trust Tower. As it is one of the most exciting new hotel properties anticipated to open last year, I had so much expectation for it. Notably, it is hoped to capture the perfect balance of "east meets west." And as someone who grew up in New York City, I could not have imagined a more perfect resemblance of this idea in this particular EDITION hotel, part of the Marriot International group. By now, if you search up this hotel, you'll be able to find every fact that you need to know about it, so I will continue sharing my stay and thoughts instead.

Upon arrival, we were quickly greeted and checked in (after all of the safety measure requirements of course, due to Covid). Although we were a bit early, our room had already been prepared for us, so it was nice to quickly stop by and leave our things before heading to a couple's massage at the The Spa at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon. While I have not had too many luxurious hotel spa treatments before, I could still sense that this one would be extremely self-rewarding thanks to all of the pre-spa services that were offered to us; from a quick consultation to make sure what was best for our massages, the welcoming drinks, and even a quick run-through of our private spa room to make sure that we found everything at ease. With all of the working from home as of late, it definitely made the 90-min massages that we got even more satisfying than we could hope for. Something that I did not get to photograph from the couple spa suite was their sauna and steam room, which was something I found to be super luxurious and thoughtful as I have not seen that from any other hotel's massage services.

After a quick refresher, we headed back to our room and were greeted with a sunset view of the Tokyo Tower right outside our window, just about to light up for the evening. We sat cozily on the couch and admired the skyline view outside our massive windows, and just couldn't help but feel a sense of calmness and relaxation even though we were somewhere in the center of one of the busiest cities in the world. (If you followed along with my stories on Instagram, you'd probably remember that my boyfriend actually fell asleep shortly after on this couch because the faux fur throw just made this spot that much comfier for a quick pre-dinner nap).

That night, we were treated to a lovely dinner at The Blue Room (an all-day restaurant that's located behind the Lobby Bar, also with a sweeping view of the Tokyo skyline and even higher glass windows for that up-close and personal seat next to the infamous Tokyo Tower. While the food was truly one of the best western meals I've had in a long time, what made our dinner more special was the knowledgeable sommelier and restaurant service that you usually don't expect to see and get in most hotel dining areas. Overall, I highly recommend the restaurant if you happen to be looking for a taste of New York's fine dining in Tokyo.

Though we ended the night quite early (due to the responsible hotel staff for following city-wide regulations of closing up before 10 pm), we weren't too worried even if we stayed up a little longer for another drink in our room as the hotel's generous check-out time of 12 pm by default meant that we could take our time in the morning and have some breakfast too.

Sticking to the "east meets west" theme, we decided to order some 'Crispy Pork Bacon' (if you're from out of Japan, you'll definitely understand how difficult this is to come by in Tokyo) and a glorious 'Avocado Toast' (also something that you don't get often here either). But if you're in the mood for something more traditional, then the hotel has that covered too.

A quick shower after devouring my breakfast to take advantage of the hotel's special Le Labo "black tea" signature scent that's offered throughout the entire hotel. I spent most of my morning after that in the hotel's La Bottega robe, which I was so close to purchasing one for myself because it is one of the best robes I've ever tried on. One of the things that truly made this hotel one of my favorites, out of all the ones I've experienced, is the design of the rooms. So airy, spacious, and a really delicate mix of Japanese elements but still quite modern. I later found out that the interior was all designed by Kengo Kuma (the same designer of the Tokyo Olympic Stadium) and it all made sense.

It all happened so fast and this stay seems to pass by so effortlessly, that the next thing we knew, it was time to check-out. Before leaving, we enjoyed a brief moment in the green lobby. Unlike some of the more upscale, and high-end hotels that I've been to in Tokyo, The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon doesn't feel pretentious or stuffy at all. I felt at ease in casual everyday wear, as you can see above. Something like a cozy neutral knits, some classic denim, and clean sneakers will do. I'm such a big fan of beautiful spaces that you can be comfortable and yourself in because, at the end of the day, I think luxury is all about the comfort of feeling like you're home. For my partner and I, our stay here totally satisfy a little bit of our cravings to be back in New York City again. But when I'm back in Tokyo, you can bet that I'll be back here for a night or two again, for sure.
